with:

My gamer side. Yeah, like you couldn’t tell from my absence what I’ve been doing for the last two months! The addiction to World of Warcraft rages on. My Night Elf Hunter promptly took a back seat to my Death Knight at level 55, and I’m working on the slow journey to level 80 with the Death Knight. And along the way, I’ve made a few more characters, so I have my own small case of alt-itis. I don’t have the veritable army of alts that my mother has, but still, if I make more than two more new characters, I’ll have to make them on a new server since I can’t have more than ten on the server that I play on now. Then they’ll be the poor relations, since there won’t be any of my other characters over there on the other server to share gold. Gold makes it all so much easier…big surprise…

My family more often, both the immediate members and the ones far away, as we play WoW together. I see my youngest daughter and husband more, since we all play in my studio together on separate computers. Sometimes we adventure together in-game, or help each other kill the difficult monsters. I talk to my mother, aunt and cousin more, though it must be noted that the conversations are mostly game related and take place in the in-game chat window!

The taxes. Ugh. Big UGH. But it’s not like you can just not do them. (Though at the moment, it’s tempting to make a try for the “not doing them” technique, and see how long I can stay under the radar on that.) And I have all that business stuff to make it 150% more complicated this year too. Yes, I’m whining. It’s my blog and I’ll cry if I want to!

My chauffeur side. I spend way too much time driving lately. GuitarGirl has graduated from high school, gotten a new job at the Commissary and started college classes, so my taxi duties have quadrupled (or maybe quintupled) in the last few weeks. Not that I don’t enjoy driving my car as I’m still in love with everything about it even though it’s over three years old. It’s just an awesomeness that I’ll never get over probably. In fact it’s the only thing that makes the taxi duties tolerable at all, but I still would rather pass on it and never leave my house unless I felt like it and there was good shopping on the other end of the journey, tyvm. On top of all that, it’s a bit freaky to have a child in college. I’m just sayin’.

I’ve been doing some printing on fabric off and on lately, using EQ Printables Premium Cotton Satin Inkjet Fabric Sheets. I picked up a 6 sheet package at Quilt Market in Houston in 2008 so that I could try it out. The results with the EQ Printables are okay, but I haven’t been ecstatically happy with them, so when I was ordering from SoftExpressions.com recently, I decided to order a package of Jacquard Cotton Ink Jet Printing Sheets to see if it was any better.

I actually wasn’t planning on doing any sort of really scientific side-by-side comparison when I ordered the Jacquard, but after I printed an image on the EQ Printables and was pretty unhappy with the way the ink ran and spread during the rinsing phase, I decided to print the same image on the Jacquard to test it out. And okay, it’s still not a terribly thorough analysis since it’s not like I’m going to burn through three or four more sheets to test different kinds of images on each of these brands, but I think the results are worth sharing anyway.

Here’s the head to head, brutal comparison:(...)
Read the rest of Head to Head: EQ Printables vs. Jacquard Cotton Sheets (579 words)

I’ve been trying to get back into the swing of things here, with very little success. Ever since I got off the plane on Tuesday morning, I’ve been trying to “get it together” and “get back to normal” and I can’t figure out why I’m not getting there. I just don’t feel like doing anything. Except reading. That’s about it, truly; I just feel like reading books. Which makes me feel like a total slacker…

Perhaps it’s because I’ve spent the last year and a half or two years being horribly busy all.the.time., with never enough time to do all the stuff that had to be done, much less all the stuff I wanted to do. So even though I now have some breathing room, I can’t for the life of me figure out what to do with it.

Maybe it’s because I know that there are still so many things I need to be doing right now that I just can’t even figure out which one I should start on. And that’s not taking Christmas or the impending house move into account either.(...)
Read the rest of Motivational Difficulties (399 words)

Now I say “may not be” because I’m really not quite ready to consign them to the ranks of the innocent just yet considering that one was crawling up my leg this morning at my computer, so I’m not quite so sure about that one, and I’m sure he has brothers and sisters somewhere.

But you know, I was in the shower this morning and I looked up, and there was a spider in the corner. Well, it’s a tall shower and it was a small spider, and so it didn’t require screaming and running from the room as it might have on another day with bigger spider in a different shower. Besides, I was all wet and still had conditioner in my hair, so it just didn’t happen. I decided I would just share with the spider for a few moments until I could finish, though I did try for a little more alacrity than usual.

So I watched the spider, because, well, I wanted to keep an eye on it, since if it got too close I really would leave the shower, or at least try to spray water at it and wash it down the drain or something.(...)
Read the rest of Quilting Habits and Instincts (1,506 words)

Pull out your camera, any camera. Even disposable cameras work. Look through the view finder, and voila, you have a reducing glass, and every little flaw now pops out at you!

Here’s the picture on the webcam (if I had one, which I don’t, so you get the verbal):

I’ve been immersed, buried, snowed under, whatever you want to call it, putting the finishing touches on the DreamWeaver’s Quilts Studio online shop. Yes, I think I remember saying something like “finishing touches” last week sometime (or maybe I just thought it to myself in my rather overly optimistic moments), but here I am this week, and it’s almost the end of this week, and I’m still working on those pesky finishing touches, and have been all day, every day since then. The sheer number and variety of little things that must be fixed, tested, fixed again, nudged, massaged, tweaked, tested again, decided, found, purchased, and fixed one more time and then tested some more is staggering to the point of being completely paralyzing sometimes. I’m afraid to even really say “It’s almost there,” (even sorta quiet-like) because I know I’ll probably spend at least another whole day or six making it ready before I can actually say “It’s done.”

I’ve been sick as a dog (where the heck did that saying come from anyway? I mean, it works for me, since I don’t like dogs anyway—they’re fine if they belong to someone else and they get bonus points if they’re cute, fluffy, drool-less, or fit in a purse, and see their friend the groomer for a regular gig—but really, “sick as a dog” is just strange).
When you’ve oh, so carefully sewn two pieces of the exact same size together, yet one of them overhangs the other by yards at the bottom of the seam.

When you’re trying to cut a simple thing like 1½” strips, and every time you move the ruler, the fabric twitches like it’s alive and you’re straight edge is just gone.

When you’ve spent an hour tracing the template and fussy cutting the perfect piece for the center of the block, and as soon as you pick it up off the cutting mat, the bottom drops out and the edge wobbles like a drunken sailor on deck in a storm.

When the edges of the quilt top have waves that could challenge Waikiki beach for the best surfing.

When the borders look like they were sewn on with a ruffler attachment, but you don’t own one, and you’re not even sure what one looks like.

When you take a quilt out of the washer to find that the beautiful red batik has bled, but the extra color has only attached itself to one other fabric in the quilt. Too bad it’s the background fabric…

When you were so 120% positive you had more of that beautiful border print that you tore apart your entire studio looking for it, only to find 4 extra yards of it stashed carefully away just as you finish adding a completely different and much more difficult border treatment to the quilt.

When you’ve spent eight hours searching for it online and waited weeks for it to arrive in the mail from some strange little shop in Timbuktu, the same fabric that made your best quilting buddy’s project just sing makes your quilt look like it has the stomach flu.

When…
