Things that keep me from quilting #5: Site maintenance

I’ve spent most of this “too hot to quilt” week doing website maintenance, so some of you may see a bit of a different look. I say some of you, because if you’re viewing the site on a monitor that’s set for 800×600 resolution, you won’t see much difference in the overall look. Here’s a hint though: you’ll be able to see so much more, in a much more “roomy” style, if you change your resolution on your monitor to at least 1024×768! Not just on this site either, but on the World Wide Web as a whole. So many pages are just so full of information that 800 pixels wide is just not enough to hold it all!

Other than adding more wide open space, you’ll also notice that I’ve added a search function to the site. You’ll see a search box like this on every page:

Try it! This function is in Beta, which means that it’s in the testing phase, so if you get anything weird looking, that’s why. I’m still bug hunting and cleaning up the code. I hope the site search feature is helpful to you. Do leave a comment to let me know of any weirdness, and how you like it!

Comments are working!

After a 13+ hour marathon troubleshooting session yesterday, I’m happy to report that the comments feature for the weblog is fully functional now! Again, many apologies if you’ve ever tried to comment and couldn’t. A few tips:

You must be registered and logged in to post comments. Registration is no big deal, you just have to enter your e-mail address, pick a username, and your password is immediately e-mailed to you.
When you login the first time after you register, you are taken to a page that looks nothing like the weblog! Don’t panic, just look for a link that says “View site” and click it. Then you’re free to comment on whatever you like.
If you ever need to change your info, like your e-mail address, you can click on “Site Admin” in the sidebar and you’ll be taken to a page that looks nothing like the weblog, but you are still here, and you can change your information at will.

And now for the privacy stuff: even though you must enter your e-mail, it is stored in a secure location, and will only be used to send you mail for admin purposes (when you get your first one with your password, if you forget the password, or change it) and will never be shared with a third party.

To anyone who has tried to post a comment to the weblog and been unable to, I must apologize! The comment feature hasn’t ever worked, as far as I can tell, or it may have gone bad during an upgrade or something, and shame on me for not thoroughly testing it. (I don’t comment on my own entries, though!) So, I’m working on that now, and hope to have it fixed fairly shortly.
