Disappearing Threads

Quilting with variegated threads is great—some of the time. Variegated threads can add color movement and something extra special to background or all-over quilting designs, but when used for motifs like feathers, variegated threads can sometimes do a disappearing act, making it look as if parts of the quilting design are missing. The fabric plays a huge part in this act; is it light or dark, or a busy print? Is the thread heavily variegated with values both light and dark, or are the variations more subtle? Thorough experimentation with the fabrics and variegated threads you plan to use is the key to success and a beautiful quilt!
