UFO Report! One down, 24 to go…

Here’s a pic of the little quilt I finished up this morning:

Ode to CB

I appliquéd the cat after the quilt was basted together with the batting and backing, just as an experiment. I basted the layers with water soluble thread, then appliquéd the prepared pieces onto the quilt through all three layers, free-motion quilting them at the same time with coordinating thread. The basket and the fabrics in it were applied after the quilt was bound and washed. The basket is pin-woven bias tape, which I tea dyed and stained, then burned with an iron to get the shading on parts of it. I’ve tentatively called it Ode to CB in honor of our little girl cat CB, who passed away in November, 2005. When I orignally made this block, I selected fabrics for the cat that would kind of look like her. I think the cat could use a little more definition below the chin area, so maybe I’ll use some of my fabric paints and see what I can do.

Oh, by the way, here’s another nail in the coffin of the “off the Wal-Mart shelf” sewing machine: to stitch the layers of fabric rolls inside the basket down, I was sewing through 20 layers of cotton fabric plus the batting, and my machine didn’t hesitate. I don’t think the $150 machine at the local department store would do that.
