Off the Bookshelf—Dresden Plate
I’ve just received my copy of Dresden Plate: New Quilts from an old Favorite. For anyone who doesn’t know, my quilt Paisley Pavane is featured in the book, along with the other 17 finalists in the yearly contest. Full of inspiration, this book has articles about each quilt written by the quiltmakers. In each article, you’ll learn a little bit about the quiltmaker, their ideas and inspiration about the quilt, and special techniques used in constructing these innovative quilts. The quilts are all innovative interpretations of the traditional Dresden Plate block. If you’re looking for a way to break out of your box, look to this book for some great ideas.
The book is beautiful, but I was sadly disappointed by the color reproduction on my quilt photos. Should you wish to see the quilt as it truly is, you can see it in the Newest Quilts Gallery, or you can check the Shows page for galleries and museums that will be hosting this special exhibit as it travels around the United States until the end of 2007. Oh, BTW, the cover is not as pictured at Amazon, and they may not even have it in stock as of this writing. Try the AQS site to order.

[…] Since we’re on the subject of the New Quilts from an Old Favorite Contest, check out Tumbling Blocks, another book of prize-winning quilts from AQS. My Butterfly Houses quilt was awarded second place in the Tumbling Blocks Contest in 2001, and is featured in the book along with 17 other finalists’ quilts. This is a great “break out of your box” book, full of ideas and inspiration on every page. Here’s the idea: Each year the contest has a different theme, a traditional block (2001’s theme was Tumbling Blocks), and entries must be an innovative interpretation of the theme block. Anything goes, as long as it’s quilted. It’s truly amazing to see the different quilts that are all based on the same original pattern and to read about the inspiration, design and construction processes for each quilt. I learn new things just by reading these books, and I learn even more by entering the contests. I tend to utilize my computer to help me design these innovative quilts, and it’s usually a fairly long process from conception to realization. Each quilt that I’ve made has stretched my boundaries in some way, sometimes in many ways. Pick up a copy of the book, enter the contest, and be stretched. Winner or not, you’ll be glad you did. […]
